Walps - Katarina Mazur - Choreolab 2020
Choreolab is a winter intensive facilitated by GroundWorks DanceTheatre in Cleveland, OH. Walps is&#38;nbsp;the product of my creative interest in Ukrainian folk dance and music. Nicole Hennington (dancer/choreographer) and I wondered how this interest might meld with more contemporary sensibilities. The sounds of Walps were created through improvisations on cajon, and accordion paired with a vocally guided French Horn samples performed by Franco Ortiz. The bassline was composed from Ти ж мене підманула&#38;nbsp;(Ty Zh Mene Pidmanula), a humorous Ukrainian-Georgian folk song. The title, which translates as, "you tricked me and let me down," are the lyrics of the chorus of the tune. The work was performed as a partner dance, with a saddened intensity.&#38;nbsp;Choreolab culminated in two informal showings, one at Oberlin College and one at Cleveland State University.We’re Sisters!


An improvised performance featuring Katarina Mazur on Harp, Kayla Reagan on Fiddle, and Oli Bentley on Accordion. Our trio combines the timbres of folk music with contemporary improvisation techniques and live electronics designed in ableton and MaxMSP.&#38;nbsp;

Symbiotic Tendrils


Stereo-Fixed-media composed from processed vocals, harp, bassoon, classical guitar, organ, and baroque oboe. The work seeks to evoke a cellular membrane&#38;nbsp; of femininity through themes of community and ritual. I hoped that the sounds would highlight the future-primordiality of the work through lyricless vocal expression, folk-songstyles, and electronics. These sounds guided improvised movement within a textile wombspace for Louise Wurzelbacher’s Senior Dance Recital.&#38;nbsp;

	Tubis is an iterative visual meditation on Oberlin’s clay-rich soil. In Tubis, Oberlin’s forgotten histories are enshrined in a living sculptural environment of foraged objects and plant materials.
 The sculptural components of Tuis were displayed in order to enable daily living and working meditation on their interaction. The sculptural work was combined with a musical piece written for 5-tubas and electronics. The music was presented via a wireless speaker hidden in a large rusty pipe. When the corona virus struck, the installation was moved to my backyard, where I continued to meditate on its energies. The installation inspired presence in the changing of seasons and topography of my little piece of land behind the Mickey Mart gas station and convienience store. The walnut saplings and cleavers hugged the objects. The grass grew greener. The crocuses sang their nightly song with the peepers. Tubis became a home to the sweet spirits of Spring and Summer. This iteration of Tubis is depicted in Tubis - the video, which was edited with the suport of Joohee Park (NYC).&#38;nbsp;The installation was presented in an outdoor exhibition in Summer 2020.

These two pieces of music were organized for what would have been the world premier of BIRFTH ensemble in my Senior Degree Recital. The event was originally planned for a multimedia presentation in Fairchild Chapel on April 29th, 2020, my birthday. However, COVID-19 rendered the site-specific performance impossible. Instead, Gusty, part II of the BIRFTH Collection, was published to raise bail and post-release funds for protestors arrested in BLM protests in Summer 2020. The album raised over $5,000 for National Bailout Collective and COVID Bailout NYC
In the two jam-sessions that I hosted in the chapel prior to COVID-19, I was experimenting with sounds and harmonies that could be lived in and percieved through the skin. I wanted the piece to be felt in addition to being heard. In Gusty, instrumentalists were instructed to create a hocket-like texture. Within this texture, instrumentalists were invited to de-tune and re-attune to one another across the improvisation.&#38;nbsp; In Musty, instrumentalists were invited to meditate on the sensation of phantom-beats made by two pitches played only a few cents apart. These works were experiments performed by a loving community of talented artists for which I am eternally grateful! May we find eachother once again. This work can be conceptualized as 40 minutes of divination channeled through musical performance on Harp, Classical Guitar, Baroque Recorder, Meantone Organ, &#38;amp; 3 voices. These musical messages manifested in a large dimly lit cavernous chapel. Instrumentalists were guided by a visual score comprised of public domain images, and a 4-Channel fixed media track composed from digital audio samples of harp, rain, singing bowls, and voice. These guiding forces were inspired by tarot, a visual divinatory practice, and Pauline Oliveros’ Deep Listening, a sonic meditation practice. The piece unfolded as the sun set in celebration of the first day of Spring, the Worm Moon, and Purim on March 20th, 2019. The piece began with an original arrangement of Vashti Bunyan’s Hebridean Sun. Drawing upon the idoms and orality of folk music, Vashti’s work became the harmonic, scriptural, and thematic ingredients for our sonic ritual. The lyrics, our chosen incantation, describe the coming of spring, with disinct references to the Tower, a Major Arcana Tarot card often symbolizing change and revelation:Travelling towards a Hebridean Sun

To build a white tower in our heads begun
The grass knows
The hills know
We all know
Spring has come
The good fountain flows..
 The work moves through various modal-melodic behaviors, and microtonal sonorities. The piece flows towards a meantone Climax in a pure C# Major chord. The piece then drops into spiraling birdsong on Baroque Recorder. Shortly after, invisible voices emerge from the speakers. These are the voices of mischevious elves. The elves sing and babble amidst the warbling of sonic-loops. Each loop was previously divined on my loop-pedal (my magic mirror). The piece ends full circle, with Vashti Bunyan’s Hebridean Sun and a passionate recorder solo.&#38;nbsp;

	III is the third film in a grant funded film series titled,&#38;nbsp;The Fifth Day of the Fourth Month of the Twentieth Year. The series was completed in Summer of 2020 in collaboaration with Elia Tzoukerman (Film-maker), Georgiana Johnson (Dancer/Coreographer), Marlena Gonzalez (Composer), and Samuel Narvaez (Composer). Filmed on a 16 mm Bolex, the creative process focused on the socially-distant medium of film in order to enable asynchronous collaboration between artists across the physical barriers of quarantine.
The film takes place in an imagined past-future: an abandoned domestic space reanimated by a single woman and her belongings. In order to convey distinct stages of the COVID-19 crisis linked to the unraveling of the protagonist’s internal world.


 In stage III of the work, I expand upon the “main theme” of the score, which I composed from major-second-harmonics devised on my harp. These major seconds are sampled throughout films I and II. The main theme is paired with extended techniques performed on my Harp, Fife, Accordion, Metal Cabassa, and Cajon. Each sonic gestural drama aims to heighten the visual qualities of physical and emotional instability, femininty, and decay within the film.&#38;nbsp;The film is set to premier in January of 2021 at the Asheville Fringe Arts Festival.
